Civil/Structural Design Engineer - Solar & BESS Energy Projects

Location: Los Angeles Metropolitan Area (Hybrid Work Schedule)

Are you an experienced Civil/Structural Design Engineer looking to make an impact in the renewable energy industry? Join a dynamic team where you will play a crucial role in designing, optimizing, and supporting large-scale solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. Your expertise will help shape the future of sustainable energy infrastructure by ensuring the successful planning, design, and execution of commercial and utility-scale renewable projects.

Position Overview

As a Civil/Structural Design Engineer, you will be responsible for facility-level design and analysis of solar and BESS energy facilities. This role involves reviewing and refining plan sets for photovoltaic (PV) and BESS system installations, including site plans, geotechnical reports, erosion control measures, structural layouts, material take-offs, and equipment specifications. You will collaborate closely with customers, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver high-quality, optimized designs that seamlessly transition from concept to field execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the civil and structural aspects of solar and BESS project designs, including grading, structural integrity, foundation layouts, and material specifications.

  • Perform analysis of critical reports such as topographic surveys, geotechnical reports, Alta surveys, hydrology reports, and environmental impact assessments.

  • Develop and optimize PV and BESS designs, considering site constraints, constructability, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Provide engineering support throughout project development, estimating, procurement, and construction phases.

  • Review and approve vendor specifications, material selections, and installation methodologies to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry best practices.

  • Conduct site visits to verify field compliance with engineering designs, providing QA/QC oversight and troubleshooting as needed.

  • Coordinate with project managers, estimators, and stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely project execution.

  • Utilize and maintain civil/structural engineering calculation tools to size equipment and materials appropriately.

  • Evaluate commercial agreements, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Interconnection Agreements, and Service Contracts, to ensure project feasibility and compliance.

  • Assist with permitting and regulatory approval processes as required.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (ABET-accredited preferred).

  • 1-3 years of experience in civil/structural engineering, with a focus on utility-scale solar/PV and BESS projects.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D, Bluebeam, L-Pile, Google Earth, RISA, and other engineering software. Experience with PLS-CADD is a plus.

  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to independently conduct engineering calculations and design evaluations.

  • Familiarity with industry standards, including NEC, IBC, ASCE, and ACI.

  • Effective communication and organizational skills, with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • Field experience with construction methodologies, site evaluations, and QA/QC practices.

  • Willingness to travel up to 30% for site visits and project coordination.
